Snore and peace
Snoring is a common night time affliction. A recent study undertaken for Yougov1 found that 45% of people question admitted to snoring. According to the study it was age related, 22% of 18 to 24 year olds increasing to 55% in the over 60’s. It is also gender related it is more common in men
Snoring and the more complex obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are common sleep disorders resulting from repetitive narrowing and collapsing of the upper airway. Obstructive sleep apnoea, or OSA, is a breathing problem that happens when you sleep. It can affect anyone – men, women or children.
When you’re asleep, your throat muscles relax. In some people, a narrower airway means they snore. But if your throat closes completely, you stop breathing for a time. For some people this happens throughout the night and it’s called OSA.
Untreated OSA is associated with multiple adverse health outcomes including systemic hyper-tension, coronary artery disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, increased motor vehicle accidents, congestive heart failure, daytime sleepiness, decreased quality of life, and increased mortality.1 Snoring is also a significant social problem and contributes to decreased quality of life for bed partners through disrupted sleep.2 Snoring itself may have a negative health impact, such as increased risk for cardiovascular disease.3
In recent years, oral appliances (OAs) have become an increasingly common treatment for OSA and snoring. Although positive airway pressure (PAP) remains the most common and most efficacious treatment for sleep disordered breathing, OAs offer effective therapy for many patients with OSA. These devices offer advantages over PAP in that they do not require a source of electricity and are less cumbersome, especially with travel. Oral appliances are well tolerated in most patients, and therapeutic adherence may be better than CPAP.4
